What is Hunger?

Definition of hunger (Miriam Webster)

a:  a craving or urgent need for food or a specific nutrient
b:  an uneasy sensation occasioned by the lack of food
c:  a weakened condition brought about by prolonged lack of food

Hunger is an individual-level physiological condition that may result from food insecurity.

Food insecurity is a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food.

Food insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time.  Food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.  Source:  http://www.ers.usda.gov/
