What Help Can I Get?

Assistance is offered face to face and in some cases home visits; includes making copies of supporting documents and using the HHSC website YourTexasBenefits.com. This is conducted in six out of seven counties in the Brazos Valley.

We cover Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Madison, Robertson, and Washington counties; Leon county is covered by East Texas Food Bank and can be reached at (800) 815-3663.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

TANF is help for families with children who are 18 and younger who don't have or get much money. It helps pay for basic needs such as: Clothing, Food, and Housing costs.

Monthly TANF payments are based on family size and income (the amount of money from jobs and other sources). Families who get TANF must follow program rules to in order to maintain eligibility.

Medicaid and CHIP

Cover visits to doctors, dentists, and hospitals. They also cover medicines ordered by doctors and dentists.

  • Medicaid = No co-pays
  • CHIP = co-pays

Medicaid is for:

  • Children age 18 or younger
  • People age 65 or older
  • Pregnant Women
  • People with a disability
  • Families who can get TANF cash help

Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is for

  • Children 18 and younger
  • Children in families who can't get Medicaid and can't afford health insurance.

* Some families might need to pay a yearly fee and co-pays for some services.

Healthy Texas Women Program

Provides family planning services and annual exams at no cost to eligible, low-income women.

You may get services if you are a woman, age 15 to 44 years old, you don't have health insurance and you have low income. You also must be a Texas resident and a U.S. citizen or a legal resident. Women who are not pregnant can get services through the Healthy Texas Women Program.

The Healthy Texas Women Program services are limited to:

  • One family planning exam each year which may include screenings for breast and cervical cancer, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, high blood pressure and other health issues.
  • Birth control, except emergency contraception.
  • Pregnancy prevention counseling.
  • Follow-up family planning visits related to your method of birth control.
