As a loving mother of four, Solidad is dedicated to her children above all else. After her 6-year-old son, Gustavo, was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, Solidad became his 24/7 caregiver.
Her husband works full-time, but as the cost of most necessities remains high, the family sometimes has a hard time keeping enough healthy food on the table.
Thankfully, Solidad’s children bring home Brazos Valley Food Bank’s (BVFB) BackPacks every Friday, which include healthy snacks to last through the weekend. This ritual became a sweet point of connection for the brothers when Gustavo’s medical challenges began.
A couple years ago, Gustavo hit his head at school. After an Emergency Room visit, extended time in the hospital, and countless tests, he was diagnosed with a condition that causes multiple types of seizures.
During this time, Gustavo’s brothers made sure to send their parents with a few of their BackPack Program snacks to give Gustavo while he was in the hospital.
“It was a blessing because once my son had his accident, it's what kept the brothers together,” Solidad shares.
She has also been able to access BVFB Mobile Food Pantries, which she says have been tremendously helpful with providing things like vegetables, meat, and cereal for her family.
“[BVFB programs] help me through the whole month,” Solidad says.
Not only does your generosity provide consistent nourishment for families but it also helped Solidad’s children bond and stay connected during a difficult time.
