“Any way we can give back to our community that's right here... is really important to us,” Hailee Hinkle shares on behalf of Sigma Phi Lambda, a Christian, non-panhellenic sorority open to students at both Texas A&M University (TAMU) and Blinn College. Together, the sorority sisters invest their efforts into making clean food and clean water more accessible to their neighbors in the Brazos Valley and abroad.
Hailee, in charge of service for this local chapter, had volunteered at the food bank where she grew up, so connecting with the Brazos Valley Food Bank (BVFB) once in college made sense. Because BVFB’s mission is food related and the Volunteer Center can accommodate large volunteer groups, Hailee knew BVFB was perfect for Sigma Phi Lambda.
“I’m a nursing student, so like giving back and helping those that need it or that maybe don’t know they need it is just so important to us. And, I know the girls love just getting to do that,” says Hailee. “Why not give back to the place that we call home...and get to serve [neighbors] that need extra help,” Hailee says. “Just making anybody a little bit happier than when you found them is just so important to me.”
We are so grateful for the sorority sisters of Sigma Phi Lambda and for all of our volunteers. Together, we are creating a more resilient Brazos Valley where nutritious food and opportunity are attainable by all!
