BackPacks

The Brazos Valley Food Bank's backpack program provides food for children over the weekend in a backpack discreetly distributed every Friday throughout the school year. Schools are provided 30 backpacks per week to provide to children at risk of going hungry over the weekend. These backpacks provide children not only needed nourishment but school readiness, self-confidence and a self-assured start to the school day and week. During the summer months, scaled down BackPacks operate at recreation centers and other venues.

Top 5 reasons children are chosen for the BackPack program:
1. Guardian works, but cannot make ends meet
2. Guardian does not work or temporarily out of work
3. Grandparent raising child
4. Guardian is disabled or sick
5. Other: Single parent raising child, several children in household, child lives with relatives, etc.

One month (4 backpacks) - $28
6 months (26 backpacks) - $182
12 months (52 backpacks) - $364

Of the 55,000 individuals served in 2008 by the Brazos Valley Food Bank and it's partners, 20,000 were children. More children and more schools could benefit from our BackPack program. Please consider sponsoring a BackPack or conducting a BackPack specific food drive.
